Puh Toh Tze Temple

Sabah is proud of its multiculturalism and this is often reflected in its diverse architecture. The Puh Toh Tze temple is a Buddhist temple located off Tuaran Road.

Built in 1980, the temple stands out with its traditional Chinese roofing and structure. Ten large statues of deities adorn the temple with the Goddess of Mercy, Kwan Yin, standing tall at the main entrance of the temple.

Getting There

The Puh Toh Tze Temple is located some 15km from the city centre. Take a taxi from the city centre for approximately RM15.00 per ride.

Arrange for your return with your taxi driver. You can also take Bus no.1 or No.3 from the bus station in front of Wawasan Plaza for RM1.20 per person. Inform the bus driver of your destination. Buses run from 6:30am to 8:00pm.

A visit to Kinabalu Park will never be perfect without swinging by Poring Hot Springs. Situated 40 kilometers (25 miles) slightly northeast from the Parks HQ, Poring is located in the lowlands—a contrast to the Parks HQ. De-stress and soak away the sores and aches of your muscles in the spring’s hot sulphuric minerals, deemed to have healing properties and very popular among the locals.

Other than the natural hot spring main attraction at Poring Hot Springs, there are also other interesting areas in the park to be visited such as the butterfly farm, the Poring Orchid Conservation Centre, the tropical garden, the Poring canopy walkway, and the Rafflesia flower site.

Essentials

For a satisfying trip to Poring Hot Springs, visitors are recommended to bring some vital things such as rubber sandals/slippers, change of clothes, towel, and swimwear.

Poring Hot Springs is open daily from 7am to 6pm.

Getting There

Poring Hot Springs is situated approximately 136 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu (3 hours drive away). One can choose to either go by bus, take a taxi, or rent a car to get to Poring Hot Springs

Petagas War Memorial Putatan West Coast Division

The heart-wrenching sacrifice of the brave and the fallen are revered at the Petagas War Memorial. The memorial was built in remembrance of those who lost their lives defending Sabah during the Japanese occupation in World War II. The Memorial is located on the exact spot where 176 Sabahan guerillas were massacred on January 21st, 1944.

Beautiful plaques are inscribed with the names of those who died, with well-kept lawns surrounding the area. Every year, a memorial service is held here on January 21st to commemorate those who fought and fell during the war.

Getting There

A 15-minute taxi ride from the city centre will cost around RM17.00 per taxi. You can also take Bus No. 17B (headed in the direction of Putatan) from the bus station in front of the Wawasan Plaza shopping centre.

Inform the bus driver your destination and he will bring you to proper drop off point. Buses run between 6:30am to 8pm and fares are at RM2.00 per person.

Papar Papar District West Coast Division

The agricultural town of Papar is situated 38.5 kilometers from the State Capital, Kota Kinabalu. Journey from Kota Kinabalu to reach Papar takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour by car and 1 hour and 30 minutes by train.

The most popular spot in the Papar district is its Tamu (Sunday market) which opens every Sunday from 6a.m to 1.30p.m. The Tamu offers a wide variety of juicy local fruits, unique Sabahan handicrafts, fresh vegetables, fish, and many more.

Visitors who take the train will get to cross the Papar River over a steel trestle bridge as Papar, the ‘Rice Bowl of Sabah’ comes into view.

Getting There

Visitors intending to visit Papar can come either by train, bus, or taxi.

Visitors may take the train at the Tanjung Aru Train Station to reach Papar Train Station. From Monday to Saturday, the train is scheduled to depart at 7.45a.m and on Sunday, the train departures are scheduled at 7.45a.m and 1.35p.m. Train fare per person is RM1.85 per way.

Buses to Papar can be taken at the Bus Station if front of Wawasan Plaza; drop off point is at the Papar Bus Station. Please communicate with the bus driver or the conductor regarding your desired drop off point. Buses are available daily from 6.30a.m to 6p.m. Bus fare is RM5 per person/way.

Otherwise, visitors with extra budget allocation can take a taxi (from taxi station near Merdeka field) to Papar. Taxi fare is RM50 per taxi/way.

Kota Kinabalu Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC) West Coast Division

For a decent rush of adrenaline, stress relief and sheer fun, gather a bunch of friends and get geared up for some paintball action at the Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC) in University Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

ODEC is by far the largest paintball utility in Sabah. It beckons paint commandos to have a field day playing Recball (a non-tournament game), Speedball (a game wherein teams play in closer proximities and the only barriers are man-made bunkers), and Woodball (a game played in a more natural setting and broader boundaries).

To minimize impact and bruising, be sure to clad yourself in thick clothing, covering as many parts of the body as possible. The minimum age requirement for this game is 10 years old, and as long as one is fit enough, there’s no age limit to this game. A caveat: those with respiratory and cardiovascular health problems should take extra precautions.

ODEC is open daily from 8am to 5pm. Reservations are to be made two weeks in advance.

Kota Kinabalu North Borneo Railway West Coast Division

Take a ride on the North Borneo Railway and relive the nostalgic romance of British North Borneo. Passengers hop on a steam train straight out of the 1900s, chugging along the tracks from Tanjung Aru, through Kinarut before arriving in the Rice Bowl of Sabah, Papar. Along the way, soak in the green vistas of sprawling paddy fields, traditional village homes on stilts and buffaloes ambling in the distance.

On board, passengers are treated to a rare delight: A Tiffin-style breakfast and lunch, comprising of Asian and Continental cuisine. The train features five fully refurbished colonial-style passenger train carriages that can accommodate a total of 180 passengers. The North Borneo Railway is built and operated to the highest of international standards and is fully compliant with modern safety standards.

The North Borneo Railway runs two weekly departures (Wednesday and Saturday) and a trip typically runs for 4 hours. An early booking of at least 1 (one) day before departure is required.

This is a beautifully-crafted 18-hole 6173m golf course designed by renowned American golf architect Ronald Fream. Stretching from the edge of low hills and reaching towards the sandy beaches, this par 72 championship course requires both strength and strategy from the golfer with its numerous dogleg holes, meandering waterways, bunkers and not to mention the ocean winds.

The Club is equipped with buggy facilities, golf equipment rental,open-air driving range, practice chipping and putting greens, spacious changing and locker rooms, Pro shop and F&B services.

Kundasang Mountain Torq Via Ferrata Ranau West Coast Division

The name via ferrata, or via ferrate (plural) originates from an Italian word ‘Via Attrezzata’ (fully equipped road), which means routes that are secured by handrails, ladders, cables or lifelines.

Mountain Torq’s activities are run by Moutain Torq Sdn Bhd which is based in Sabah, Malaysia. Launched in mid-December 2007, The Mountain Torq Via Ferrata is a mountain ‘trail’ made up of iron rungs, palettes (footholds), cables and rails that are wrapped around the North Face of Mount Kinabalu.

Mountain Torq Via Ferrata starts at Mount Kinabalu Panar Laban Rock Face (approximately 3,300 meters) and reaches its highest point at 3,800 meters.

Thrill seekers adrenaline junkies will get their sufficient fix from the available packages at the via ferrata, namely: Walk the Torq, The Low’s Peak Circuit, The Preamble, The Balancing Act, The High Path, and Conquer the Torq.

Other activities available are intro to sports climbing (single pitch), intro to sports climbing (multi pitch), sports climbing level 1, sports climbing level 2, intro to rappelling (abseiling), rappelling (abseiling) level 1, and intro to rope ascending.

Accommodations are available at the Pendant Hut—3,270 meters above sea level, which can accommodate at least 30 people at one time, with a dormitory-bunk bed type.

The Sayat-Sayat—3,668 meters above sea level, which accommodates 10 people at a time, with a dormitory-bunk bed type.

Getting There

The Mountain Torq Via Ferrata is 88 kilometers away from Kota Kinabalu, or 1 hour and 30 minutes away by road transportation.

By bus, visitors can take a bus headed to Kundasang or Ranau at the City Bus Terminal (North). Buses from Kota Kinabalu to Ranau are available from 7.30a.m to 5p.m; bus fare is RM15 per person.

To return to Kota Kinabalu, take a bus across road outside Kinabalu Park (reconfirm with Kinabalu Park reception counter) headed to Kota Kinabalu.

By taxi, visitors can take the Ranau taxi at the Ranau taxi stand (next to the Merdeka Field) or request from the hotel lobby. From Ranau Taxi station, taxi fare charged is RM160 per taxi; while from hotel lobby, taxi fare charged is RM300 per taxi.

For a return trip to Kota Kinabalu, take a bus from Poring Hot Springs to Ranau town. From Ranau town, find a taxi back to Kota Kinabalu.

Visitors can also rent a car and drive by themselves. Cars can be rented either directly from car rental companies or requested via hotel lobby car rental service. Rental charge is from RM180 and above per car/ day. Please refer to car rental list for more information.

Tee off in dramatic style with Mount Kinabalu as your backdrop with the cool crisp air greeting you right here at the Mount Kinabalu Golf Club. Situated on the Pinosuk Plateau at 1,500 meters above sea level in Kundasang, Mt. Kinabalu Golf Club is the highest golf layout in Sabah. Designed by Robert Muir Graves, the golf course boasts a breathtaking landscape made up of sprawling farmlands and rolling hills.

Many golfers agree that this 18-hole course is both physically and mentally challenging with its ever-present winds, steep slopes and surrounding mists. With occasional thick fogs, some even say it feels like you're playing in the clouds! One of its notable holes is the 14th, par 3, 142 meters, which features a gushing river at the bottom of a deep ravine. It is a true test of skill once you get here: you will need an accurate shot from the elevated tee across the Mesilau East River to land on the green perched on the edge of a cliff.

Facilities include a clubhouse, golfers' lounge, practice putting and chipping green, golf shop, rental of buggy, golf shoes and golf sets, and caddy service.

Getting There

By Taxi

From Kota Kinabalu, take a taxi from the taxi stand next to Padang Merdeka (Merdeka Field) or your hotel lobby. Fares will cost approximately RM160-300 per taxi.

By Bus

You can also take a bus for RM15 per person. Busses depart from City's North Bus Terminal to Kinabalu Park. From here, you will need to arrange transport to get to the Golf Club (refer to Kinabalu Park's reception area for assistance).

Rent-A-Car

Renting a car will cost around RM180 and above per day. The journey will take around 2 hours.

WELCOME TO SABAH : Monsopiad Cultural Village

Nestled besides the Penampang River are the many traditional buildings that make up the Monsopiad Cultural village, a living museum located 16 km or about half an hour away from the KK City Centre. Monsopiad was a fearsome warrior who lived in the village of Kuai nearly 200 years ago.

At the Village, visit the Tangkob or Grainery where the padi is housed.

Kotos Di Monsopiad or Monsopiad's Main House is dedicated to the life and times of Monsopiad and his descendants. On display are ceramic jars, padi grinders, bamboo items as well as the costume of Bobohizan Inai Bianti, direct descendant of Monsopiad and very senior high priestess.

Other interesting exhibits include the massive monolith which invokes a dozen legends, the traditional restaurant and of course Siou Do Mohoing, or the House of Skulls, where all 42 'trophies' of Monsopiad hang from the rafters.

Getting There

Take the No.13 bus to Donggongon town in Penampang from the bus stations in front of City Hall or Wawasan Plaza in KK City. Fare is RM1.50. At Donggongon, board a minibus bound for Terawi and indicate your stop to the driver. Fare is RM1.00. You can also use any taxi to get there for RM35.00. Or contact the Village for shuttle services.
